John Wilson, Assistant News Director at CBS 3 and The CW Philly, has been promoted to Vice President and News Director, it was announced today by Brien Kennedy, President and General Manager of the stations.
“John has been instrumental in both developing and executing the plan that is setting CBS 3 apart from its competition and generating new audiences across the broadcast day,” Kennedy said. “CBS 3 is the only station in the market to experience gains in both the morning and late news virtually every month for more than a year now, and John has been a key member of the management team that has made that possible.”
Wilson joined CBS 3 as an Executive Producer in 2003. He was named Assistant News Director in 2009. In addition to helping both stations’ morning and evening newscasts grow their audiences, he has also been the primary strategist for the stations’ coverage of such major events as the Papal visit in 2015 and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in 2016.
Wilson began his career as a reporter at KZTV-TV in Corpus Christi, Texas before moving on to WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi as a newscast producer. He later produced and developed newscasts for stations in Knoxville, Seattle and Orlando before coming to Philadelphia.
Wilson is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He has also studied at the Poynter Institute.
