Cody and Paulie Calafiore of Big Brother help in fundraising effort; Philadelphia’s Kevin Hart surprises viewers with a contribution
CBS 3 and The CW Philly’s eighth annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Telethon, a 14-hour on-air fundraiser that aired live across both television stations, raised more than $1.2 million today. The Telethon brought in $1,202,377, upping the funds raised for the charity to more than $ 7.4 million since the first CBS 3 fundraiser in 2010.
Donations came from corporate sponsors, community groups, viewers who called into the Telethon and one big surprise from Comedian Kevin Hart, who is in Philadelphia shooting a movie.
Anchor Ukee Washington asked Hart whom he has interviewed many times, to call in a hello. He did one better and sent a video making a $10,000 contribution.
CBS 3’s Ukee Washington, Jessica Dean, Kate Bilo, Don Bell, Stephanie Stahl, Jim Donovan, Rahel Solomon, Meisha Johnson, Katie Fehlinger, Natasha Brown, Nicole Brewer and Tori Woodill hosted the event with special guests Paulie and Cody Calafiore of the CBS hit reality series Big Brother, Swoop and the Eagles Cheerleaders, the 76ers Dunk Team, the Philadelphia Soul players and Soulmates and the Philadelphia Phillies mascot, Phoebe.CBS 3 Reporter Pat Gallen broadcast live from Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey where the charity collected donations all day.
On-air personalities from the CBS RADIO stations in Philadelphia, including Marilyn Russell and Frank Lewis of 98.1 WOGL’s Breakfast Club, Rich Zeoli from Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Joe DeCamara of SportsRadio 94 WIP,Bennett of Today’s 96.5, Andie Summers and Frank Lario of 92.5XTU and Melony Roy of KYW Newsradio were also on site taking pledges on the phone from viewers who wanted to support the cause.
All funds raised through the telethon will directly benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region, a non-profit organization that creates, finds and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children in our community. Locally, RMHC supports four Ronald McDonald Houses, 16 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, more than $130,000 in college scholarships, the St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children Ronald McDonald Care Mobile and other children’s causes. The charity receives its support from McDonald’s Corporation, McDonald’s Owner/Operators, corporate donors and McDonald’s customers.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities Telethon was presented by Capital One, Health Partners Plans, Keystone First, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Penn Mutual, P.J. Whelihan’s Pub & Restaurant, ShopRite, and The Tri-State Toyota Dealers Association.
